Angels Of Death

“Angels of Death” anime has, after all, been inspired from the game of the same name. There, things ended a tad differently. Zack does break into Ray’s room at the mental care centre, but he is spotted doing so. First Angels of Death Ending. This is based off this speculated ending: Rachel has been canonically diagnosed with mental delirium. In this ending, she has an episode of delirium and envisions Zack visiting her and finally killing her. But she’s actually plunging the knife into herself, committing suicide.

What we have here with Angels Of Death is a game that is part RPG and part visual novel. Now granted this does not make this a special game as it is a style of visual novel that has become very, very popular in Japan and now, here in the West we are starting to want a bit more gameplay with our visual novel style games.

Help Me, Then Kill Me

The strongest aspect of the game is the story. I would say that horror is the genre that is best fitting for this game. However, it is not a jump scare kind of horror game. Instead what we have here is a game that is more psychological and a game that will give you a really uneasy feeling as you play it and progress through the four-part story.

There are two main characters in Angels Of Death. First of all, we have Rachel (Ray) who wakes up in a very strange medical facility, not knowing why or where she is. Then we have Zack, someone Ray meets and decides to work with to get out of this place, but with the added strangeness that he kills her when they make it out! It sounds very strange and it is, but this game takes you on an emotional roller coaster.

Not Good For The Soul

The themes of Angels Of Death are rather hard to swallow. This is 100 percent, not a game for kids as there is abuse, murder and more all in this game. The main character of Ray is very complex and as you learn more about her past and why she is the way she is your feelings will go through every part of the emotional spectrum. By the time I got to the end of the game I was not sure what to feel, but I knew I had experienced a game that I would be talking about for quite some time.

The Maker Of The RPG!

Angels of death anime

You will probably not be all that surprised to hear that the game is made with RPG Maker. Many games that are made with this have a similar “feel” and that is certainly the case here. I am not saying this is a bad or good thing, it just is what it is. What is interesting though is that while there is a lot of walking around and exploration here. Despite being made in RPG Maker you do not have to worry about “leveling up” or being strong for lots of combat or anything like that. This is a game that is first and foremost about the actual story and the gameplay just serves as a more interesting way to get from point a to point b.

I thought that the story Angels Of Death told was fantastic. I am not sure I would play through this game again as there is not multiple endings. However, it is the kind of game that really did leave a mark on my soul and the kind of game I love to talk about with others who have played through it.

Final Score: 9/10

Pros:

  • The game has a very dark story
  • Rachel and Zack are two fantastic characters
  • The ending is very interesting
  • It looks great
  • I liked how the story moved at a good pace

Cons:

  • Not a ton of actual gameplay here
  • Some of the themes are very, very dark!

The concept of an angel of death exists in multiple religious traditions. However, is there an 'angel of death' in the Bible? Is there a being whose primary or sole purpose is to destroy human life?
There is no being named the 'angel of death' in the Bible. Those who believe in an angel of death typically point to three passages. First, there is the claim that Exodus 11:4-5 speaks of an angel of death: 'About midnight I will go out in the midst of Egypt, and every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the cattle.' This foreboding is soon fulfilled: 'At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock' (Exodus 12:29).
However, there is no angel mentioned in the above verses. It is the LORD performs this judgment, not an angel. Exodus 11:4 says, 'I will go out.' Exodus 12:29 says, 'The LORD stuck down.'

A second passage that some use to support the idea of an angel of death is 2 Kings 19:35, 'And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.' The 'angel of the LORD' performs this act, not an 'angel of death.'

The third passage also associates death with an angel. Second Samuel 24:15-16 says, 'So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning until the appointed time. And there died of the people from Dan to Beersheba 70,000 men. And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, 'It is enough; now stay your hand.' And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.' Here, as in 2 Kings 19:35, the 'angel of the LORD' causes the deaths. He is not an 'angel of death.' In fact, many theologians view the 'angel of the LORD' as a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ (see Judges 6:22-24).
Revelation 9 speaks of angels or 'messengers' who will kill many in the last days. Again, none of these angels are called an 'angel of death.' The Bible supports the idea that God can use angels to carry out His judgments, including death. But this is a far cry from a special 'angel of death' whose only task is to take life. In short, the concept of an angel of death is not explicitly taught in the Bible.
