EndNote is a citation management software that helps you collect, organize, store, share, and format bibliographies or lists of references in your projects, papers, articles, theses and dissertations.

EndNote X9 (19) is the latest version of EndNote, and available to UHCL registered students, faculty, and staff. You can download the installer for desktop (Windows or macOS), or iPad below if you wish to use EndNote X9 on your personal devices. UHCL Campus username and password are required for downloading EndNote X9 installer for desktop. EndNote Online (Web base) is also available with limited storage capacity compared to EndNote Desktop.

Please uninstall any earlier version of EndNote on your computer before installing EndNote X9. Be sure to back up your EndNote libraries before uninstallation. How to make backup EndNote libraries .

Note for macOS 10.15 Catalina users:

  • If you currently have EndNote X8 installed, you will need to update to EndNote X9.3.1. Refer to the instructions above to backup your EndNote libraries, and then uninstall EndNote X8 prior to downloading version X9. Verify that you have the latest version by launching EndNote and then clicking the EndNote menu on the top right. A Catalina-ready version of EndNote will read 'About EndNote X9.3.1'; if X9.2 or any other version of EndNote is listed here, it will not be compatible with Catalina. To update your version, select the EndNote X9 menu and click Check for Updates. Select the option to download and install the updated version.
  • If you currently have EndNote X9 installed, install the EndNote X9.3.1 update prior to installing macOS Catalina. To do this, open EndNote X9, select the EndNote X9 menu, and click Check for Updates. Select the option to download and install the updated version if needed.
  • If you have already installed Catalina and have lost access to EndNote, click here to download the X9.3.1 installer with the UHCL license.

EndNote D4D6 EndNote 8 and 9 library formats and compatibility with older versions of EndNote. EndNote 8 and 9 Library Compatibility With the new features and database structure of EndNote 8 and 9, your libraries will not be backwardly compatible with older versions of EndNote (EndNote 7 and earlier). EndNote 9 libraries can be opened in EndNote 8 and vice-versa. If you work in an environment with older versions of EndNote, you will need to convert your existing libraries using the instructions below. Forward Compatibility to EndNote 8 and 9 To use libraries created with EndNote 5, 6, or 7, convert the library using EndNote 8 or 9. To do this, launch EndNote 8 or 9 and select File -> Open -> Open Library, and select the old EndNote library file you wish to convert. EndNote 8 or 9 will create a new version of your library and leave the original library unchanged. This new library will include a .enl file, images in the .DATA folder if present, and new application-specific files in the new .DATArdb subfolder. ++ See the Help files or your EndNote manual for further details on the new EndNote 8 and 9 library structure. Backward Compatibility with earlier EndNote versions Due to the new Unicode-compliant database structure with EndNote 8 and 9, EndNote 8 and 9 libraries are not backward compatible with previous versions. To use EndNote 8 and 9 libraries with an older version of EndNote: 1. Export the EndNote 8 or 9 library to a plain text file (.txt) using the Refer Export format: ** Please note that EndNote exports the references to the text file in the same order as they appear in your EndNote library. To retain the Record Numbers it is advisable to sort your library in ascending Record Number order before you export the references to a text file ** a. Open the library in EndNote or 9 and make sure all references are showing. b. Select 'Refer Export' as the output style. c. Select File -> Export, enter a file name, and save the file to a convenient location such as your desktop. 2. Import the Refer Export text file into the earlier version of EndNote: a. In the older version of EndNote create a new library or open an existing one. b. Select File -> Import. c. Click the 'Choose File' button and select the text file you just created. d. Under 'Import Option' select 'Refer/BibIX' e. Click the 'Import' button. N.B. URL's will be imported into the Notes field in your older version. To keep the urls, it is also possible to use the 'Endnote Export' output style and the 'EndNote Import' import filter (not the hard coded one that appears on the import list, but choose other import filters then 'EndNote Import'. Compatibility Issues: * Unicode support is new to EndNote 8. Data corruption may occur when importing Unicode characters into earlier versions of EndNote which did not support Unicode. * EndNote 8 and 9 use a UTF-8 format when exporting to a text file. Earlier versions of EndNote (and Reference Manager and ProCite) import and export files using the ASCII format. Therefore if the text file exported from EndNote 8 or 9 contains any non-ASCII formatted characters, these characters may not import correctly into earlier versions of EndNote. * Reference types new to EndNote 8 and 9 will import as Generic in earlier versions of EndNote. * Record numbers are not preserved when importing from a text file into an EndNote library; EndNote will assign record numbers to the imported records based on their order in the text file. * If you use the EndNote 8 or 9 Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools on a Microsoft Word document, do not use the CWYW tools from an earlier version of EndNote on that document or you may encounter compatibility issues and experience document corruption.
