- Select the file and press Command-i to get information on it. Expand the Open With section. Choose any program from the drop-down menu other than the current one, even if the current is the desired one. Click the “Change All” button and confirm this action. Re-select your initial (or desired) program, and again click “Change All.”.
I had the same problem and was able to get it to work by doing the following:
The icon will be added to the folder. To remove icons from a folder. Open the folder with the icon you wish to remove. Tap and hold the icon until it becomes movable. You'll see the icon lift off the menu. Drag the icon to the bottom of the menu and continue to hold it while hovering over the text Drag here to move outside the current folder. If you’ll be using these icons with 10.7.5 or earlier, you have two ways you can apply these icons to folders and drives. The first (and probably the best) way is to use this drag and drop method on a newer OS version, transfer the folder with the icon to the other computer, then use the older copy/paste method there.
* Open the new folder icon in Preview
* Command-C to copy the image
* Get Info on the folder that you want to replace the icon
* Click on the blue folder in the top left (or PNG icon with apple logo from a failed attempt) - It should be outlined in blue
* Command-V to paste the new icon

But the key for me was opening the image in Preview and copying it. Drag and drop seems broken right now.
